Relationships in Hudu let you connect relevant modules, mapping out your documentation as an actionable breadcrumb trail. This lets technicians:
- Navigate large amounts of documentation quickly.
- Link relevant step-by-step processes and KB articles to provide procedures, assist with support, and share real-time status reports with clients while recording actions performed.
- Create or connect passwords tied directly to an asset, so usernames, passwords, and TOTP codes can be copied straight from the asset page.
Relationships can be created between data of the same type (for example, linking one asset to another) or between different types of data (for example, linking an application's login credentials directly to the application).
Visit Asset Layouts, Processes, and Process Runs for additional information on enabling abilities and working with processes.
Guides
Access to related items and functions may vary depending on your Hudu user role and the security permissions set by the admin and super admin accounts at your organization. To use related items, you'll need at least two pieces of information stored in a client space (two passwords, KB articles, assets, processes, or a mix).
Related items
The Related Items tab appears on the right-hand side when you're inside a single item in one of your spaces (an asset, password, process, KB article, website page, or a client's expirations list). It's the tool for building your web of interconnected documentation and navigating across a client's records. Assets also have separate Processes and Passwords sections, which let you link an asset directly to processes and to relevant passwords (with copyable username, password, and TOTP code, subject to permissions).
The Related Items section appears inside a client's asset, KB article, process, password, website page, or expirations list. For this example, navigate to client space → asset layout (e.g. Desktops) → individual asset (e.g. Fred's Desktop), then find Related Items on the right-hand sidebar.
From the Related Items section you can:
- Preview an existing related item without navigating away — hover over it and click the Eye icon. Choose Open Asset to navigate to it, or Close to dismiss the preview.
- Add a description — hover over the record and click the Pencil icon.
- Remove a relation — hover over the item, click the Trashcan icon, and confirm.
- Add a related item — click + Add.
The + Add module lets you:
- Select the type of information to relate to (client, custom asset, article, password, or website).
- Enter the name of the item to relate to.
- Uncheck Limit to client to relate an item stored in another client space.
- Check Include archived to link to items in the Museum.
Processes can serve as how-to guides, SOPs, or a record of procedural actions performed. To relate a process to an asset:
- The Processes ability must be enabled on the asset layout you're working with (see Asset Layouts), and the process must exist as a template (see Processes).
- Navigate to client space → asset layout → individual asset, then find the Processes section on the right-hand sidebar (shown only if the ability is enabled).
- Click + Add to see the client's process templates, then select the one to link. This creates a run of that process, ready to complete for the chosen asset.
The preview, description, remove, and add controls work the same as in Standard relations, above.
Visit Process Runs for how runs are created and completed.
Existing passwords can be related, or new passwords can be created directly from an asset. Passwords related via the Related Items tab also appear in the asset's Passwords section.
Security permissions follow those placed on the password and are inherited from the parent asset they were created under; further restriction is still possible.
- Navigate to client space → asset layout → individual asset, then find the Passwords section on the right-hand sidebar (shown only if the ability is enabled).
- Click + Add to add a new password, then click Create or Create and Add Another to save.
- Back on the asset page, you'll have a direct link to the password, with copyable username, password, and TOTP code (if configured).
Asset links
Asset links are an alternate way to link assets to other assets. They're clickable related-item links stored inline with the rest of your documentation, in an asset's custom card section.
Asset links start with an Asset Link field added to an asset layout. When creating the field, select which asset layout it should "pull from" (that is, where the item you'll link to lives). Creating asset link fields requires the admin or super admin role. For more on adding fields, see Asset Layouts.
To create the connection:
- Navigate to client space → asset layout where you added the asset link field.
- Click into an individual asset → Edit (top right).
- Find your asset link field and search for the asset you'd like to link.
- Click Update to save. The linked asset now appears as a field in the custom card.
FAQ
Related items create direct links to relevant information, so a technician servicing an asset can reach everything connected to it (subject to their permissions) from a single window.
Troubleshooting
The asset layout the asset lives in likely has its Passwords ability disabled. An admin or super admin should go to Admin → Asset Layouts → the layout in question, click Edit Asset Layout (top right), and under Customize Abilities ensure Include passwords is enabled.
